SUPERMARINE LADIES WIN PLATE COMPETITION AT LYTCHETT MINSTER 7's (02-05-04)
Supermarine Ladies travelled to Dorset for Lychett Minsters annual 7s tournament on Sunday 2 May 2004. Unfortunately Supermarine did not start well in the pool competition losing to Richmond in the first game 22-7. The second game against Worthing was won 22-0, which meant that the last pool game against Alton needed to be won to progress to the Cup competition. This game was lost 22-0 and Supermarines injury crisis was increased with the loss of Jules Boyle mid way through the game with a serious broken leg.
Supermarine were then given a bye in the quarter finals of the plate competition and met Petersfield in the semi final winning 17-0.
The final was against old rivals North Dorset and Supermarine lead 10-5 at half time. A tightly contested second half saw Supermarine take victory with a final score of 17-12.

SUPERMARINE LADIES BLITZ NEWBURY
Supermarine Ladies started their pre-season build-up with a comfortable victory against lower division Newbury on Wednesday evening.
New winger Hayley Coles made an immediate impact, beating the opposition for pace to score Supermarine's opening try. Sisters Rachel and Heidi Jelleyman used their experience to control the game in the back line. Young centre Emily Doyle started her first full season in style with a try and Rachel Brinn added another to mark her return from injury. Impressive handling in the back line helped Hayley Coles run in a further four tries. Claire Holliday, Julie Boyle, Cathy Paish, Heidi Jellyman, Rachel Jelleyman and Shona Watt all added their names to the scoresheet to compound Newbury's misery. Five conversions by Claire Smith and one from Julie Boyle made the final score 92-0.
Supermarine now face Sandhurst in another away friendly on Sunday before kicking off the league with a tough opening fixture against ex-Premier II side Whitchurch on September 15.

SUPERMARINE PUT RECORD STRAIGHT AGAINST AVON
Supermarine Ladies settled an old score against local rivals Avon in Friday evening's friendly. With several players unavailable, Marine fielded a much changed line-up that included the return of ex-Wasps player Kirsty Hudson in the backs. The team gelled well and were dominant throughout despite the disadvantage of uncontested scrums. The forwards secured a majority of possession for the backs, creating openings for Claire Dykas who scored four times from the wing. The try rout also included scores for Hayley Cole, Shona Watt, Hudson and a penalty try from a break by Julile Boyle. Emma Matthews finished Avon off with her first try for Marine. The final 49-0 victory included two conversions from Debbie Gorrod.
Bolstered by the ongoing support of sponsors Zimmer, Marine are hoping for good crowd suppor

MARINE PUT UP A FIGHT AGAINST WORCESTER
Supermarine Ladies travelled to Worcester on Sunday for their last pre-season friendly before kicking off the league season against Whitchurch this weekend. Despite competing well in the forwards, Supermarine went behind early in the game after Worcester's Ist team backs pounced on a couple of mistakes to score two break-away tries. Supermarine kept up the pressure and it finally paid off when Rachel Jelleyman broke through the Worcester defence to close the gap before half-time.
In the second half Supermarine changed their game plan to exploit their strength in the forwards. The strategy paid off with strong support and good interplay between the forwards producing two tries for Heather Connock and Shona Watt both created by Claire Holliday. Wing Debbie Gorrod converted two of the tries to make the final score 19-31.

MARINE GO TOP AFTER WORCESTER WIN
Supermarine travelled away to play in the first big clash of the season against top of the league Worcester seconds and the Wiltshire side duly dethroned their opponents with a 36-22 win.
Worcester started well, looking the better team and scored within 10 minutes of the kick-off.
Supermarine responded with a try from centre Claire Dykas, while Worcester's well-drilled backs were kept at bay by some excellent tackling and defensive play.
Marine's resistance was eventually broken though as the hosts broke the line and scored two tries.
Great attacking play from Supermarine's forwards, especially Fran Brewer, resulted in tries from Shona Watt, Rachel Brinn and scrum-half Alex Parker to end the first half 26-17 in Marine's favour.
Worcester started the second half with some determined play and scored a try from a back line move, but Supermarine kept up the defence and fought back with another try from No. 7 Watt.
Fly-half Rachael Jelleyman took control of the match and excellent kicking from second row Claire Smith resulted in four conversions and a successful penalty to send Marine to the top of the league in place of their victims.

MARINE CLEAR
Supermarine Ladies travelled to the West Midlands on Sunday for a crunch match against closest league rivals Camphill. It was a scrappy game in which the home team were given numerous penalties but failed to turn them into consistent possession. Marine scored the first points from a penalty kick from Claire Smith. They quickly increased their lead from a ruck near the Camphill line when captain Alex Parker popped the ball to flanker Shona Watt who broke through the last Camphill defender to touch down. Supermarine looked threatening whenever they pieced together coherent passages of play. Determined play by Claire Dykas on the left wing was rewarded when she touched down to score Marine's second try. It was a good performance by the backs and Heidi Jelleyman and Hayley Coles were both unlucky to score following long runs deep into Camphill territory. Marine's forwards were once again impressive, dominating in the scrummages and creating penetrating phases of play including a disallowed try by Claire Holliday. They eventually got their reward when the forwards drove the Camphill defence off the ball metres from the line leaving Watt with a simple pick and place for Marine's third try. Claire Smith slotted another penalty kick to put the match out of sight. Camphill scored in the dying seconds of the game to make the final score 5-23. Marine are now four points clear at the top of Midlands I with two games in hand over second placed Whitchurch.

PROMOTED SUPERMARINE LOOK AHEAD TO NEW SEASON
AFTER securing promotion to Premier Two last weekend, Supermarine Ladies are looking forward to testing themselves on the national stage.
Marine claimed a place in the second tier of women's rugby via a tense four-team play-off in Coventry and now captain Alex Parker admits her charges cannot wait for the new season to begin.
She said: "Everybody is looking forward to the challenge greatly.
"I think we have a chance of doing well.
"We would love to be challenging straight away, but realistically I think we're good enough to finish upper mid-table.
Marine will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Wasps second string and Parker hopes her players use the platform to further their rugby careers.
"Playing in Premier 2 gives the players a good stage to show what they can do.
"There is the potential to be spotted and maybe a few of them can go on to get international recognition."
Promotion was gained at Broadstreet RFC, where the champions of North One (Blaydon), South East One (Rosslyn Park) and South West One (Chesham) provided tough opposition for Midlands One champions Marine in a round-robin tournament.
Marine's chances were hanging in the balance after an opening-match defeat at the hands of Rosslyn Park, but Shona Watt's converted try gave Marine a 7-0 triumph over Chesham in a game two.
The Swindon side trailed on numerous occasions in the third and final match, but a dramatic last-gasp try from Rachel Jelleyman was converted by Claire Smith to secure a 19-19 draw and a place in the national division.
Jelleyman was an apt scorer of the decisive try, having been influential in the club's formation a decade ago.
She said: "I have been here from the start and it is the greatest achievement in our history.
"Everyone is really looking forward to next season and to testing ourselves at the higher level."

Redruth scored in both halfs but tough resistance from Marine prevented several more tries.
Narrow Miss for Marine (07-03-07)
Supermarine 7 - Cullompton 10Supermarine Ladies faced Cullompton at home on Sunday in what turned out to be the most difficult playing conditions yet this season. Marine had a promising start despite many of the team playing out of position. Cullompton were put on the back foot several times in the first half. After a string of attacks Marine were able to cross the line with a try from debutant back Monique Theron.
The second half saw the loss of Captain Claire Chard and Sarah Allen due to injuries, leaving the pack very vulnerable. The ladies battled on and made ground after great runs by the backs but were unable to secure anymore points. Some hard tackling and a tremendous effort from the whole team kept up the pressure on the opposition. Cullompton managed to break the defensive line on 2 occasions before the final whistle, stealing victory from the home side. Alisa Cullen and Rachel Bailey also made debut performances for Supermarine Ladies.

Trojan Ladies 8 - Supermarine Ladies 17
Supermarine Ladies returned to winning form on Sunday in an impressive victory over Trojans. The team travelled to Southampton with a squad of only 14 players in what proved to be a very tense game after a home defeat earlier in the season.
The ladies started well and took an early lead with a try by Hayley Coles following some stylish moves by the backs. A conversion by Full Back Natalie Williams took the score to 0 - 7 to Marine. The 7-man pack had a challenging role in the scrums against a much heavier opposition. Trojans put us on the back foot but Marine ladies defended superbly and were able to hold up one attempted try. With aggressive play by the forwards and some excellent rucking by Fran Brewer Supermarine were able to secure possession of the ball.
This led to another try by fly-half Zoe Walsh. A penalty and try by the home team took the score to a very close 8 - 12. Some excellent runs by the backs gained alot of ground and put us in attack again. An injured player in the Trojan team meant play was interrupted and the match had to be moved to another pitch. In a bizarre turn of events play was again stopped after both teams were asked to help push the ambulance which had got stuck in the mud! After continuation of play Supermarine Ladies sealed victory with a second try by speedy winger Hayley Coles.
Captain Claire Chard said "It was an outstanding effort from the team and they all showed guts and determination when under extreme pressure"
Coaches Ian Chard and Paul Stewart said "It was a massively determined effort by all the ladies. We took our chances well and every player stood up to be counted."
Supermarine Ladies have their next home game this Sunday 4th March against Cullompton.

In a hard fought battle Supermarine continued to keep the pressure on but Redruth were able to break through on 2 occasions before half time. Some superb defence from Marine prevented the home team touching the ball down for the remainder of the match, although they clinched a few more points from 2 penalties. In the backs Becky Chester made an impression on the game with some great passing and popping out of contact to keep the ball alive. Taunton 0 - Supermarine 55 (14-01-07)

From the restart, Hayley Coles was able to score under the posts following some slick moves from the backs, and the scoreline continued to mount in Supermarine's favour.
Didi Simpson made some superb runs, and chipped over the defensive line to set up more than one try, and after 68 minutes, Supermarine had crossed the line nine times, whilst keeping a clean sheet. However owing to injuries to the opposition, the final 12 minutes were played as a friendly as Taunton dropped to 11 players.

Supermarine 32 - Oakmeadians 5 (10-12-06)
In stark contrast to the opening match of the season against the same opposition, wet, cold and windy conditions saw Supermarine field an untried combination of players in what turned out to be their strongest performance of the season to date.Good ball retention and high pressure from Marine allowed the ball to be cleared well from rucks - this saw excellent runs up the wing from Sarah Biggs, and excellent tackling from Kate Kowalzcuk.
The second half saw good kicking into Oakmeadians territory extending Supermarine's score to 32; a strong defensive line held the visitors to one score.

Notable tries came in the form of a hat-trick for Number 7 Shona Watt, and a run from halfway to score under the posts by captain Zoe Walsh. Supermarine Ladies experienced their first league defeat of the season on Sunday in a top of the table clash with Southampton's Trojans. Supermarine suffered the loss of several keys players due to illness. They started the game with many players in unfamiliar positions which led to Marine being on the back foot from the beginning. The first half saw Trojans break through the home side's defence to score a succession of tries. Supermarine started the second half with 110% effort and were successful in keeping the Trojans out of their half for the first 15mins. Marine were close to the try line a on a few occasions but were unable to score. Trojans went on to score a few more tries before the final whistle, but not without tough resistance from the Marine ladies including some superb tackling by Sammy Way.

League Victory (25-09-06)
Supermarine Ladies travelled south to Bournemouth to play Oakmedians in what was again unseasonably warm weather. From the outset Supermarine looked the stronger side, and following excellent play by the forwards, the back line got the ball to fullback Natalie Williams, who scored under the posts and then converted her own try. The dominance of the Marine pack was evident, when they pushed over the line from 10 yards out, allowing Theresa Bickell to increase the scoreline. Not to be outdone, stunning play from the backs say Hayley Coles looping to create the overlap, and scoring just inside the corner flag. With minutes to go before halftime, scrum half Theresa Bickell went blind from the lineout, and following some excellent passes and support with Sammy Way, the ball reached Hayley Coles who scored her second try of the match. The second half opened with Marine on the back foot and Oakmedians scoring their only points of the match, but good set plays, some excellent driving mauls from the forwards and a good defence line allowed Marine to regain compusure. Shona Watt, returning from the World Cup in Edmonton made her presence known as she scored a valuable 5th try, earning Supermarine a bonus point in their first league game of the season. The ladies are at home next week against Taunton, our cheering section is growing on a weekly basis, we'd love to see new faces on a Sunday afternoon, and if you're interested in playing, it's a great time to meet the team!

Promising start for Supermarine Ladies! (11-09-06)

Fran Brewer took to the field as captain, and led a side which included 5 debutantes – Cas Fraser and Amy Walford who played in the pack, Sarah Biggs, Verity McClernon and Caroline Saunders strengthening the back line. The match also saw the return of Hayley Coles after a year spent abroad. After a slow first quarter, Supermarine improved throughout the rest of the match. The score line flatters the opposition, but Supermarine have a lot to be proud of in their first game following so many changes of personnel. Their determination payed off with a try for scrum-half Therese Bickell in the last 10 minutes, which was ably converted by player of the match, Natalie Williams.

Playoffs at Lichfield (10-05-06)
Supermarine Ladies travelled to Lichfield RFC on Sunday 7th May to attempt to gain promotion into the Premiership 2 League. The competition consisted of three 40 minute games for each team, with a 15 minute rest in-between games. The other teams to get through to the Play-Offs included Waterloo Ladies, Chesham Ladies and Blackheath Ladies.
With only the one space available for promotion this year, the standard of rugby was high with Waterloo Ladies RFC based near Liverpool winning all of their games to achieve promotion.
Supermarine were slow to start in their first game and soon found themselves on the back-foot. Undeterred they fought on and managed to retain the majority of possession in the second half, unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on the possession.
Supermarine’s final game against Waterloo saw a tremendous effort from the whole team; with several players injured they were only able to bring on one pair of fresh legs. Despite the fatigue Supermarine managed to hold off Waterloo for the majority of the game, making some crunching tackles in the process and pressurising them into making several crucial mistakes on the try line. Only in the last 10 minutes did Waterloo regain their composure to secure their victory and promotion into Premiership 2.
Supermarine progress to Cup Semis (06-04-06)
2nd April 2006 - In a round robin tournament held at Trojans RFC, Supermarine had to play two matches of 25 minutes each way, and only two wins would guarantee progression to the next round. Blackheath, Chesham and Supermarine were in Pool 1, with Harlequins playing Camberley and Trojans in Pool 2. Against Blackheath, the Ladies made hard work of the match, only really coming into their own when Blackheath opened the scoring with an unconverted try in the second half. Supermarine increased the pressure, and after Blackheath gave away several penalties on their try line, Monica finally touched down for Supermarine. The conversion from Natalie in the last seconds of the match secured victory for Supermarine. In their second match against Chesham, Supermarine secured the lead early on, and maintained the pressure throughout the match. The pack performed well despite challenging circumstances - Monica moving from Lock to Prop, and a variety of personel in the second row - Lucy, Sam and Debbie all taking their turn. Supermarine and Trojans both go forward to the semi-finals of the RFUW National Shield against Waterloo and Loughborough.
Supermarine Crowned League Champions (27-03-06)
Supermarine Ladies yesterday confirmed themselves as winners
of the RFU Women’s South West 1 League.
In what turned out to be the most difficult playing conditions yet this season, Supermarine once again showed why they have been league leaders since the outset by beating Avon Ladies 26 – 5.
From the whistle Supermarine were determined to assert their authority and despite some very strong tackling by the Avon side, Supermarine managed to secure the bulk of possession and put together some good phases of play. Serious injury to ruthless flanker Sammy Way saw Supermarine come back with a vengeance to score their first try late in the first half, dealt by Captain Claire Chard. This was quickly followed by a second try from Claire, which came off the back of the dominating Supermarine scrum.
The second half began in the same highly charged fashion with emotions running high and conditions getting yet more difficult with strong winds and rain. Further strong rucking again saw Supermarine with much of the possession; however the good defence from Avon managed to hold off Supermarine from scoring. Finally flanker Shona Watt was able to break through the Avon defensive line to score a try. Further strong attacking play saw Shona cross the line to score a second.
Avon fought on until the end, and in the final 10 minutes were finally able to open their scoring with a try, closely missing the conversion by hitting the cross bar.
Some exquisite kicking from full-back Natalie Williams saw her convert 3 of the 4 trys.
Supermarine Home Walkover (06-03-06)After a late cancellation from Paignton, Supermarine were awarded a walkover.
Supermarine 46 Trojans 5 (28-02-06)
In yet another show of strength, Supermarine Ladies continued their match winning form in a home friendly against Trojans Ladies on Sunday.
Despite starting at a disadvantage with only 14 players and later dropping to 13 due to an injury, Supermarine were again able to demonstrate why they have been league leaders all season.
An impressive 8 tries were scored overall by Supermarine, with 4 of them doled out by Captain Claire Chard, playing out of position as Center. A further 2 tries were scored by flanker Sammy Way, one by Scrum Half Theresa Bickell and one by Becky Chester. Flyhalf Stephanie Watts scored 3 conversions.
Supermarine Home Walkover (19-02-06)
For the second time this season, Taunton were unable to raise a side for the match against Supermarine. The Ladies will take the points, but were deprived the chance to extend their lead through gaining a bonus point.
Supermarine 28 Bath 0 (12-02-06)
Supermarine Ladies win in style to secure their lead in the South West 1 Ladies League in a hotly contested local derby against Bath Ladies.
Despite coaching from England’s most capped fullback and star second row, the Bath Ladies scrum crumbled under the immense power and strength of the Supermarine Ladies forwards.
From the first second right through to the final whistle Supermarine Ladies played out of their skins to enjoy an impressive 90% of the possession. Bath Ladies were unable to cope when in possession of the ball due to Supermarine’s well drilled defense and so were not able to get the ball out to their backs.
Two trys were scored by Scotland International Shona Watt, one by Scrum Half Theresa Bickell and one by debutant Sam Meakin playing as Flanker. Natalie Williams’ kicking again stood out and led her to score two penalties and 1 conversion.
Supermarine 38 Redruth 7 (15-01-06)
The first game of the new year saw Supermarine Ladies further strengthen their leading position in the South West 1 league table, with a home win against Redruth Ladies.
The first ten minutes of the game saw Redruth begin strongly and immediately capitalise on their advantage by scoring a try under the posts and converting it. Undeterred, Supermarine then calmed down their game to produce some very good phases of play. Excellent rucking from the forwards saw Supermarine dominating at the breakdowns, then finally passing out to the back line to run in same hard earned tries.
The second half began with the same determination by Supermarine to play to their strengths. Some solid scrummaging by Marine soon saw them within sight of Redruths try line. Good defensive work by Redruth caused Supermarine to be unable to make any headway. Eventually Supermarine Scrum Half Theresa Bickell was able to score the try that was so hard worked for.
Natalie Williams continued her fine kicking form by converting four of the six tries scored.
Try Scorers: Theresa Bickell, Becky Chester, Monica Lewinska, Shona Watt (x 2), Sammy Way.
Conversions: Natalie Williams (x 4)
St Mary's Old Boys 0 Supermarine 31 (11-12-05)
Supermarine Ladies returned to winning form on Sunday with a strong win against St Marys Old Boys Ladies, despite the foggy weather.
The first half saw Supermarine enjoy 70% of the possession and spend much of it camped on St Marys try line, unable to break their defence. Finally Captain Claire Chard led the way with some good strong running to score the first try of the game. Some scrappy play by Supermarine saw them give away several unnecessary penalties, which allowed St Marys back into the game with some strong attacking play. Undeterred Supermarine fought on, with their hard work paying off when Claire Chard scored her second try of the game.
The second half began well for Supermarine. After a pass gone astray bounced off the ground right into the hands of Shone Watt while she was running on at full pace, saw her crack open St Marys defence and score at try right under the posts. The final two trys of the game were scored by flyhalf Zoe Walsh, who on her second try managed to outpace St Marys defence down the entire length of the pitch to score a well earned try.
Some good kicking from Natalie Williams saw her convert 3 of the 5 trys scored by Supermarine.
Supermarine 12 Trojans 17 (04-12-05)
Supermarine were defeated for the second time this season in a hard fought home game against league rivals the Trojans on Sunday.
The home side started well, putting pressure on Trojans from the kick-off and soon found themselves with a scrum just 5 meters from the try line. Unfortunately after some excellent Supermarine scrummaging completely disintegrated the Trojan pack three times running, Supermarine were still unable to steal the ball. Trojans were finally able to get the ball out quickly to pass it along their back line and to their outside centre who proceeded to score the first try of the game.
Supermarine allowed Trojans to run in a second try, before they switched on fully and came back at them hard, allowing Sammy Way to make a break through the Trojan defensive line and score a try for Supermarine, with Natalie Williams making the conversion.
The second half saw some further good play from both teams, with Trojans scoring a further try. Supermarine were finally able to use their possession late in the second half, with Shona Watt scoring the final try of the game with only a minute to spare.
Final score: Supermarine 12 Trojans 17
Supermarine 34 Chippenham 0 (28-11-05)
Supermarine continued their winning form with a solid home win on Sunday in a friendly against local rivals Chippenham. Supermarine dominated play from the whistle and opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes with a strong run from Kate Kowalczuk breaking Chippenhams defensive line and passing the ball out wide to the backs to score the first try of the game. Quick thinking by scrum-half Theresa Bickell and prop Fran Brewer saw them take a quick lineout close to Chippenhams try line and popping back out to Becky Chester to score her first try for the club. Further quick play and off-loading from the tackle by Supermarine saw them leading by 22-0 at half-time.
The start of the second half saw Chippenham raise their game and produce some solid scums, putting Supermarine onto the back foot. However good defensive work from Supermarine ensured that the score-line remained unaffected. After a period of scrappy play and some hard fought breaks on the part of Sammy Way, Supermarine were finally able to capitalise on their possession to score a further two try's.
Try Scorers: Claire Chard, Becky Chester, Shona Watt, Steph Watts, Sammy Way, Natalie Williams.
Conversions: Natalie Williams (x 2).
Paignton defeated (23-11-05)
PRESS PLAY |
Supermarine made the long journey to Paignton with a squad of 15, through freezing conditions and evil mist and fog. They were therefore pleasantly surprised by the warm sunny weather on the south coast. In what was an enjoyable game for all, Supermarine dominated the first half. After the break the team 'switched off' for almost 20 minutes, but managed to keep a clean sheet in defence. The team pulled together for the final 20 minutes, with several more scores. Claire Chard scored 3 times, Shona Watt touched down 4 times, and Sam Way scored twice. Three conversions were added by Natalie Williams, with Zoe Walsh adding a fourth. The final score was 53 points to Supermarine, with Paignton failing to score. |
Home walkover for Supermarine (14-11-05)
Top of the table challengers Taunton were unable to raise a side for their match at Supermarine, and as a result Marine were awarded the walkover. The return fixture should now also become a home game for Supermarine.
Four wins out of four (11-10-05)
Supermarine Ladies continued their impressive winning performance on Sunday away to Redruth. During a comfortable 1st half Supermarine were able to score three impressive tries by Captain Claire Chard, No8 Jess Bunce and Outside Centre Natalie Williams, who also converted 2 of the 3 tries.
The second half saw Supermarine relax a little to allow Redruth to score in the 56th minute which they also converted. Lack of discipline from the away team for being offside saw Redruth take a further 3 points from penalties.
Supermarine came close to scoring again with Flanker Shona Watt kicking the ball on and missing out on the try line and from Winger Sarah Biggs who was tackled into touch again on the try line.
Redruth responded by pinning Supermarine in their 22 for almost 20 minutes but superb tackling and defending from the team kept Redruth from taking any more points.
Supermarine remain unbeaten with 4 League wins out of 4 which puts them at the top of South West 1.
