London Welsh 12-7 Supermarine Ladies (15/04/2012)
London Welsh 12-7 Supermarine Ladies
The ultimate game of the season saw Supermarine visit London to play London Welsh. Earlier in the season Supermarine beat their opponents by 5 points but this time it was London Welsh who took the win by just 5 points. It was a full team effort from Supermarine who managed to come away with a bonus point.
Supermarine took an early lead with Full Back, Nat Williams, getting in the first and only try. She then went on to score the conversion. The forwards worked hard and made ground up the pitch on many occasions. Supermarine weren?t without their mistakes and gave away several penalties. London Welsh had a good back line, they drew Marine in and managed to get the ball out to a gap and broke through the defence to score. This led to another try for the hosts before half time was called early due to a head injury.
Although the second half saw most of the game played within Supermarines 22, London Welsh were never able to get past Supermarines strong defence and were denied from adding to the score. It was a great team performance for Marine and they gave the opposition a good challenge.
Captain and Fly Half Claire Legg commented ?I couldn?t have asked anymore from anyone.? Coach, Sean Millwaters added ?There were some outstanding performances?.
Jess Bunce was awarded forward of the match and Theresa Bickell, who?s usual position is in the forwards was given back of the match for her performance as Scrum Half.
That completed the 2011/2012 season for Supermarine and they finish a very commendable 4th. They?ve had a really good season and with many new players in the squad it is a very positive result.
Their focus now will be on pre-season training and working hard to keep up the level of rugby they have built up. Going into next season their aim will be to win the league and reach the play-offs, which is certainly a realistic challenge.
Supermarine 28-33 Bristol II (01/04/2012)
After a disappointing match for Supermarine last weekend they were hoping for a better result as they played host to Bristol Ladies II. Conditions were hot and the pitch was dry which made it a tough match and again it was not the result they were hoping for.
Bristol Ladies got the scoring underway 6 minutes into the game but gave away a penalty shortly after allowing Scrum half, Natalie Williams, to start the scoring for Supermarine. With several missed tackles from the home side, Bristol were having an easy first half and added another 2 tries to their tally. Supermarine got their first try in with just 1 minute to go before the whistle, thanks to No. 8 Claire Chard, but their work was undone when they made a mistake and allowed Bristol through in the final minute.
At the half-time whistle the score was 8-28. Not a good start for the home team.
Going into the second half, Supermarine seemed to come alive and played some good rugby with Claire Chard going over the try line again after just 2 minutes of play. The ladies displayed some good lines and most of the play was in the oppositions half. Scrummaging saw the hosts make ground on many occasions as they were able to use their strength to dominate the rivals. This enabled Chard to once again take the ball over the line making it a hatrick. Team spirit at this point was definitely high and it was coming together nicely. Another visit to the try line by No.8, Chard, meant that the ladies needed just 1 more try to equal the score. Supermarine had some excellent attacking runs, putting the pressure on Bristol, making them work hard. They hadn?t scored in the second half, which showed that Supermarine had a strong defensive line. This was until their winger managed to find space and got through, stretching their lead to 10 points. With time running out, Supermarine had a bit to do if they were to take the win. The final few minutes of the game saw outside centre, Candy Inskip, intercept the ball and make a fantastic run down the pitch. A tackle close to the try line prevented her from scoring but a great support run from Natalie Williams enabled her to recover the ball and make it a fifth try for the ladies.
It was a disappointment for the team to lose the game by 1 try but their performance in the second half showed they were definitely the better side.
Ladies coach, Sean Millwaters, commented after the match ?We let ourselves down in the first 20 minutes and gave away stupid points. We even gave away a try at half time but a good team talk saw us turn the game around and I couldn?t ask any more of the team in the second half. We deserved to win. It was the one that got away.?
Forward of the match went to both, No. 8 Claire Chard for an outstanding performance racking up 4 tries and Flanker, Theresa Bickell for her efforts throughout the match. Outside centre, Candy Inskip, was awarded back of the match. She displayed great strength and determination and put in some excellent tackles.
Supermarine Ladies will travel to London in 2 weeks where they will face London Welsh in their final game of the season.
Henley 57-10 Supermarine (25/03/2012)
Supermarine Ladies travelled to Henley for what turned out to be a disappointing game. The hot conditions didn?t help and certainly made it a tough match.
Henley opened the scoring early on which sent out the message that they were going to be a difficult side to beat. However, Supermarine were able to match that as scrum half and captain, Claire Legg, broke free and ran for the try line. Unfortunately, Supermarine weren?t without their mistakes. Henley saw the weaknesses and was able to capitalize on this. They had some fast runners who managed to find the gaps in Supermarines defence and 3 more tries were scored. The last 15 minutes of the first half saw the visitors dominate the game and most of the play took place in the oppositions half. The half time score was 26-5.
The second half saw Henley add another try just minutes after kicking off. And they didn?t stop there. 4 further tries were scored within 20 minutes which opened the gap to 57-5. Supermarine needed to up their performance if they were to change the way the game was heading. And they certainly did. The final 15 minutes of play saw Supermarine play some great rugby and again most of the action took place in the oppositions half. Although it was too late for Supermarine to take the win, they did some damage limitation with outside centre, Candy Inskip, getting in a final try. Marine also managed to prevent their rivals from adding to their total.
Captain, Claire Legg, said after the game ?We weren?t without our mistakes but we put some good pressure on the opposition and played some good rugby. We can take away some positives and negatives and concentrate on working towards next week?s match?
Hooker Amy Walford put in an excellent performance and was awarded forward of the match for her efforts. Fly half Natalie Williams was back of the match. She showed great skill and supported her team throughout.
With just 2 games remaining, Supermarine really needs to make a big push to end the season on a high. The penultimate game will be played next weekend and will see Supermarine play host to Bristol, who they beat 43-10 earlier in the season.
Devizes 0-46 Supermarine (11/03/2012)
The points kept on coming for Supermarine Ladies on their visit to Devizes, defeating their hosts by 8 tries.
Supermarine produced an all-round team performance with No.8 Claire Chard opening the scoring early on. The ladies played some excellent rugby and displayed some great strength in running the ball forward through the defence, allowing more tries to quickly follow. Amongst the try scorers were flanker, Amelia Buckland-Hurry and backs, Candy Inskip, Corinne Hunter, Natalie Walker and Natalie Williams. Williams also added 3 conversions to the points score.
Some solid tackling by Supermarine helped prevent their opponents from getting anywhere near to the try line. There were also some great lines being run making the home side work hard to gain possession.
Supermarine fielded a couple of new players this afternoon. Congratulations go to Charlie Wing who played her first ever game of rugby and Cornelia who made her debut for Supermarine. Well done also goes to Inside Centre, Natalie Walker, for scoring her first try.
It was a difficult decision for player of the match as everyone put in a great effort for the team. Forward of the match was awarded to prop forward, Natalie Knott and back of the match went to Outside Centre, Candy Inskip.
The Ladies will play host to a friendly next weekend against St Mary?s.
Supermarine Vs Reading (19/02/2012)
Supermarine Ladies picked up a well-deserved bonus point win in a fantastic performance against visitors, Reading Ladies.
Supermarine opened the scoring after 11 minutes with a penalty taken by Fly Half Natalie Williams. This was soon added to when Flanker Amelia Buckland-Hurry fought through the opposition to score a try. Reading came back with their attack managing to push forward on several occasions, however, Supermarine displayed some excellent defence, pressuring the visitors and forcing them into losing possession. The visitors eventually managed to break free and score a try, which was then converted making the half time score 8-7 to the hosts.
Outside centre Candy Inskip increased the lead with a try after just 4 minutes into the second half. Reading Ladies won the ball from a scrum and turned this into their second and last try of the match after getting past Supermarine?s defensive line. With only 1 point separating the score, Supermarine were not content and wanted to secure the win. They went on to dominate the game. The forwards made use of their strength and power and pushed forward to see most of the match played in the visitors half. This enabled No 8. Claire Chard to put in 2 tries, 1 of which was converted by Natalie Williams. Amelia Buckland-Hurry also managed to battle her way over the try line to touch the ball down for a second time minutes before the final whistle.
Forward of the match went to Amelia Buckland-Hurry. She was able to use her power to gain ground and put in some brilliant tackles. Captain and Scrum Half, Claire Legg was awarded back of the match for her strong performance throughout the game, displaying some excellent rugby.
Captain Claire Legg said after the match ?It was an outstanding performance from everyone?
Supermarine have a couple of friendly?s before their next League fixture, which will be played on the 25th March. This will see them face a tough match away against Henley.
Plymouth Albion 19-0 Supermarine Ladies (22/01/2012)
Still in high spirits after last week?s superb victory, Supermarine Ladies travelled to Plymouth, where unfortunately their winning ways were ended.
After being defeated by Plymouth at home back in October, Supermarine knew they were in for a tough match. Plymouth were quick off the mark and after just 10 minutes Supermarine found themselves down by 12 points. The home team showed some great teamwork, getting the ball out wide and making use of their quick back line. Unfortunately Supermarine?s defence was not enough to stop them. Plymouth kept on pushing and another try was added to their score making it 19-0 at half-time.
The second half saw Supermarine come alive and dominate the game. Several phases of play saw the visitors push forward and most of the play was within the opposition?s half. A try was within reach but Plymouths strong defence were determined to keep them off the score sheet. Although Supermarine were unable to claw back any points, they improved their defence and prevented Plymouth from increasing their lead in the second half.
No. 8 Claire Chard was awarded forward of the match for showing great strength and her tackles prevented the rivals from gaining ground. Back of the match went to Natalie Lewis. She showed great determination and with her power was able to make up ground throughout the game.
Supermarine now have a few weeks to improve on their performance before playing their next friendly match in February.
Supermarine Ladies Vs London Welsh (15/01/2012)
Supermarine Ladies 20-15 London Welsh
Supermarine Ladies managed to come away with another victory in what was one of their toughest games of the season. London Welsh turned up unprepared, forgetting their kit and having to sport Supermarine?s spare strip. However, they were prepared to give their opponents a hard challenge.
Supermarine started with a poor display, making mistakes in the opening stages while London Welsh began at great pace and opened the scoring after just 2 minutes of play. The rivals showed great strength and speed and they had Marine under real pressure. As play continued, the visitors kept up their strong performance. They got the ball out wide, saw a gap in the defence and scored their second try of the match. Just minutes later a third try followed, which saw them open up a point?s lead of 0-15. Supermarine replied to this with outside centre Candy Inskip scoring a late try for the hosts. This made it 5-15 going into half time.
The second half saw Supermarine up their game and this paid off when full back Steph Watts scored within the first 10 minutes. Supermarine were back in contention and with support and encouragement from the side-line, their confidence grew and they played some fantastic rugby. As the action grew in open play, Supermarine kept the ball alive. This created an opportunity for winger Corinne Hunter to bring the score level. Marine took the lead when fly half Natalie Williams put in an excellent run. This try saw the home team secure the game. When the final whistle was blown there was a great atmosphere within the team, after such a challenging match, which could have easily gone either way.
Forward of the match was awarded to flanker Theresa Bickell and back of the match went to full back Steph Watts.
Captain and scrum half, Claire Legg, said after the game ?Supermarine had a great battle in the second half to come back and win. We showed fantastic team spirit?
Supermarine Ladies make a visit to Devon next weekend where they face another tough match against Plymouth Albion, who edged them out earlier in the season.
Supermarine Ladies 36-0 Rosslyn Park (08/01/2012)
The first match of 2012 was a victory for Supermarine Ladies who played host to Rosslyn Park in a friendly.
Supermarine Ladies got off to a great start. They displayed some excellent teamwork which enabled them to push forward and see most of the game take place in the opposition?s half. Fly half Natalie Williams opened the scoring for Supermarine and went on to convert 3 of the 6 tries scored. Winger Corrine Hunter added to this putting in some excellent runs to score 2 tries. She nearly made this a hat-trick but was tackled over the line and the try was unfortunately disallowed. Claire Chard also scored 2 tries for the team. She was able to use her strength to push past the opposition giving her the momentum to touch the ball down over the line.
Supermarine continued to dominate the game and this enabled forward, Amelia Buckland-Hurry to add another try to the score sheet. With a strong defence, Supermarine, were able to constantly put the pressure on the visitors, denying them of scoring any tries.
Aileen Newport was awarded forward of the match for her determination throughout the game. Back of the match went to Fly half Natalie Williams and congratulations also goes to forward, Amelia Buckland-Hurry for scoring her first try for Supermarine.

Chipping Sodbury Vs Supermarine Ladies (11/12/2011)
Supermarine Ladies travelled to Chipping Sodbury for their final game of 2011, coming away with another victory and 5 points to add to their league campaign.
The weather was a complete turnaround from when Supermarine hosted Chipping Sodbury in scorching conditions back in October. However, despite the heavy down pour Supermarine were able to put in some excellent play which prevented the opposition from getting on the score sheet.
Supermarine got off to a good start, with winger Corrine Hunter scoring a try in the opening minutes. This was then converted by fly half Natalie Williams. Supermarine put in some strong attacking runs enabling them to gain ground on many occasions. As the rain eased off, the second half saw Supermarine push forward and dominate Chipping Sodbury?s half. This allowed second row Jess Bunce to touch the ball down over the try line. Tries were also scored by captain and scrum half Claire Legg, second row Natalie Lewis and fly half Natalie Williams. Supermarine demonstrated some strong defensive lines, putting the pressure on the home team. Although Chipping Sodbury put in a good effort, it was not enough to stop the visiting team from breaking through their defence and scoring a total of 6 tries.
Forward of the match goes to No. 8 Claire Chard for her performance and continually putting in strong tackles throughout the game. Back of the match went to fly half Natalie Williams for her 2 tries and converting 3 of the 6 tries scored. Congratulations, goes to second row Natalie Lewis who scored her first try with Supermarine.
Supermarine Ladies now go into the Christmas break but will play host to a friendly against Rosslyn Park on 8th January 2012.
Henley versus Supermarine 20th Nov 2011 (13/11/2011)
Supermarine Ladies 0 - 17 Henley Ladies
Supermarine were host to Henley yesterday in what was their toughest game of the season so far.
The first half saw Supermarine push Henley back nearly the length of the pitch to within yards of the try line. Unfortunately, a penalty was conceded which Henley capitalised on with a long kick to touch. Henley kept the pressure on and eventually broke Marine's defense to touch down over the line.
Supermarine held their heads high and were quick to get back in the game. Flankers Theresa Bickell and Amelia Buckland-Hurry were instrumental in open play with hard defensive tackles and turning the ball over on serveral occaisions.
The half time score 5-nil was maintained until well into the second half which was unfortunately dogged by a spate of injuries suffered by both teams. This didn't phase either side and the intensity stayed strong. Marine maintained a lot of the possession and consistently put the opposition on the back foot playing quick offloading rugby. Surperb runs by centre Candy Inskip broke Henley's line on several occaisions.
With 15 minutes to go Henley gained the upper hand with some great running on the wings from their backs to score a 2nd try. Supermarine still fought hard even after losing the full-back to injury. With minutes to go Henley again used the space on the wings to score, which was converted with a fantastic drop-goal.
Henley's coach said "at 5-nil I didn't know which way it was going to go. It was anyone's game right up until the last few minutes"
Supermarine Captain Claire Legg said "it was a great team effort and there are a lot of positives to come out of the game despite the loss"
Reading versus Supermarine 30th Oct 2011 (30/10/2011)
Reading Ladies 7 - Supermarine Ladies 10
Supermarine Ladies return to winning form with a gruelling 10 - 7 victory over Reading Ladies. After a shocking defeat against Plymouth last week, Supermarine pulled out all the stops to ensure another 4 points for their league campaign.
The game started well for Supermarine putting Reading under imense pressure. Scrummages dominated the game with several wheels and turnovers from both teams. Several phases of play took Marine within the oppositions 22 which set Claire Chard up for the first try of the game. Reading soon replied to this with a speedy runner breaking through our defensive line to score a converted try. Supermarine again increased the pressure forcing some mistakes from the opposition. Several phases of play culminated with hooker Amy Walford being tackled before the tryline using her momentum and superior strength to score before the half-time whistle.
With only 3 points in it Marine knew they still had a lot of work to do. Reading kept battling to no avail and the scoreline remained unchanged. Supermarine were releived to hear the final whistle as it could have gone either way!
Special mention should go to Forward of the match Prop Fran Brewer putting in some big hits in the scrum and open play. Back of the match went to inside centre Candy Inskip for her physical display in only her 2nd game for Marine. Her strong runs gained ground on many occasions and her tackles stopped the home team in their tracks. Meanwhile on the wing debutant Tania showed great promise on her first run out for Supermarine.
Captain Claire Legg said after the game "that was the performance of the season so far. I am so proud of every single player."
Supermarine 0 - 26 Plymouth Albion (23/10/2011)
Match Report to follow.
Claires score hatricks in 12-try victory for Supermarine Ladies (02/10/2011)
Supermarine Ladies were triumphant once more in their first home game of the season. Marine
hosted Chipping Sodbury yesterday in the scorching sunshine not typical of an October rugby
match. Supermarine pulled together in what was another astounding team performance. Full-
back Steph Watts opened the scoring after 3mins and continued to make an impact throughout
the game with some great attacking runs. Supermarine dominated in the scrums from the off.
The pack drove once such scrum over the try line setting up for no.8 Claire Chard to touch the
ball down. Chard went on to achieve her 2nd hatrick in as many games.
Chipping Sodbury continued to pressure the hosts but they were unable to defend against
Marines superior ability to move the ball quickly into space. Fly-half and Captain Claire Legg
exploited this and was able to create tries for centre Corinne Hunter, wingers Shellie Norton (x2)
and Jai Cunningham and run in a hatrick of her own! Scrum-half Natalie Williams was also on the
score sheet after a quick reaction to a loose ball from a Chipping Sodbury scrum, running in a try
under the posts and scoring 6 conversions throughout the game.
The second half saw Marine on the back foot and for the first time in the game and defending
their try-line. Marine's persistence won out forcing the opposition to concede a penalty.
However, Marine weren't without their faults and Chipping Sodbury took advantage of a
Supermarine error scoring a penalty to gain some consolation points.
Supermarine now face a top of the table clash away to 2nd in the league London Welsh on
Sunday 9th October.
Bristol Ladies II 10 - Supermarine Ladies 43 (18/09/2011)
Tensions were high yesterday when Supermarine Ladies travelled to Bristol for their first league
game of the season. Supermarine came away victorious with some superb displays of teamwork
in what was always going to be a tough fixture. The Ladies improved on last seasons 15-all draw
by keeping the ball alive which Bristol found hard to contend with. Prop Sarah Holmes led the
drive in the scrums putting immense pressure on the oppositions' pack. Supermarine continued
to dominate the scrums winning many against the head which gave the backs a solid platform to
work from. Number 8 Claire Chard and flankers Theresa Bickell and Amelia Buckland-Hurry
worked well together to break the defending line and gaining ground for Marine throughout the
game. Claire Chard was able to capitalise on this crossing the line 4 times. Scrum-half Natalie
Williams played a pivotal role in the game providing the link between forwards and backs and
converting 4 of the 7 tries. Captain and fly-half Claire Legg scored a hatrick of tries and
commented "we all played out of our skins".
There were double celebrations for Supermarine who were welcomed back to Swindon with Champagne and hor d'oeuvres in honour of second row Debbie Gorrod's 63rd birthday. She couldn't think of a better way to spend her birthday than getting stuck in on the rugby pitch with her teammates. Congratulations Debbie!
Supermarine Ladies next play at home to Chipping Sodbury on Sunday 2nd October.
Supermarine Ladies 105 v Witney Angels 7 (11/09/2011)
Supermarine were host to Witney Angels on Sunday 11th Sept in their final pre-season match
before the league starts next weekend. A shaky start from Marine meant Witney opened the
scoring with a fantastic run from half-way to score between the posts with Marine only able to
look on. Unfortunately for the Angels, this converted try was to be their only points of the game.
This wake up call to Supermarine prompted a scoring spree demonstrating some sensational
rugby throughout the game. Captain Claire Legg led from the front scoring no less than 5 tries.
Other scorers were Back of the Match Corinne Hunter scoring 4 with some excellent lines of
running. Claire Chard and Natalie Williams both came away with hatricks and there were tries
from Steph Watts, Catherine Twomey and Amelia Buckland-Hurry. Congratulations goes to
Hannah Gardin who scored her first ever try. Forward of the Match went to second row Natalie
Knott for her constant efforts in the breakdowns and some fantastic support running in open play.

positivity after this weeks fantastic performance.
Newbury Ladies 5 - Supermarine Ladies 27 (04/09/2011)
Supermarine ladies traveled to Newbury for their opening game of the season.
Newbury posed quite a challenge with their forward domination and strong mauling
however Supermarine were able to stand their ground and the team worked well together
to exploit the spaces and run in some great team tries. An impressive solo effort from
Captain Claire Legg saw her run the length of the pitch to score. Legg came away with a
hatrick and number 8 Claire Chard scored 2.
Supermarine also fielded 5 debutants: Hannah Gardin, Nat Walker, Sam Watts for their
first run out with marine and Amelia Buckland-Hurry and Sam Kemble first senior rugby
game.
Supermarine demonstrated a strong defense and some excellent team play throughout.
